At Chancy Drugs, hormone replacement therapy with bio-identical hormones is one major part of our compounding services. The term “bio-identical” does not refer to the source of the hormone but rather refers to its chemical structure. Bio-identical hormones have the same chemical structures as those that are produced naturally by the body, and they fully replicate the function of hormones present in the human body. These natural hormones are able to follow normal metabolic pathways and they produce the essential active metabolites that are necessary to emulate the body’s normal functions.
Many commercially available products are not bio-identical. Some are derived from animal sources (including horse), while others have been chemically modified by adding side chains to naturally occurring hormones. Since bio-identical substances cannot be patented, scientific studies are less numerous because medical research is primarily funded by drug companies. However, the chemical differences between bio-identical hormones and non-bio-identical (including synthetic and animal) hormones may explain the side effects that can be experienced with commercially available products.
There is much confusing research revolving around hormone replacement therapy (HRT), but major studies have failed to distinguish between types and dosages of HRT, or have examined only the use of synthetic/animal products. Many patients and medical professionals still remain unaware of the availability of bio-identical alternatives, and those who could benefit from bio-identical hormones continue to suffer. At Chancy Drugs, we care! Please schedule a one-on-one consultation today, our experts are waiting to serve you.
